Deputy First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon became an MSP in the first elections to the Scottish Parliament in 1999, becoming the SNP's spokeswoman on justice, and later on education and health. In the Scottish Parliament elections of 2007 she achieved a historic victory, being elected MSP for Glasgow Govan. Her current position makes her one of the most influential politicians in the Scottish Parliament.
